Meet Lakeshia

Lakeshia Finch was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and she’s the second oldest of four siblings two sisters and one brother. One of the joys of her life is running it brings her great satisfaction. Lakeshia competed in track and field at Rockwood Summit High School where she was a state champion in the triple jump. 

She graduated from Rockwood Summit High School, then attended Abilene Christian University in Texas on a full Track & Field Scholarship. She excelled and went on to set multiple records at Abilene Christian University in Texas and was the NCAA Division II Indoor triple jump champion in 2003. She holds many records to date at both institutions. For the past 10 years, she has played women’s kickball with the Untouchable’s Team who have won several championships in the St. Louis area. Lakeshia has always been a standout accomplished athlete and she’s received many accolades over the years. Not to mention, she played softball and basketball as well as the violin. After graduating with a B.A. in business she then attended Fontbonne University and obtained a master’s degree in Business.

The Story

Lakeshia’s fearless pursuit of adventure and willingness to take risks had shaped her life, allowing her to navigate numerous experiences unscathed and eagerly embrace each new challenge. However, an ordinary evening spent dining with her closest friend would forever alter the trajectory of her journey.

Tragically, Lakeshia and her best friend found themselves caught in the crosshairs of the St. John Applebee’s shooting on June 22, 2020. What was meant to be a simple gathering to enjoy a meal and unwind after a canceled boot camp session turned into a nightmare. Lakeshia was unexpectedly shot at close range by a stranger, while her dear friend lost her life at the scene.

The aftermath of that horrific incident brought about profound changes in Lakeshia’s life. She now faces the daunting task of dealing with a severe spinal injury in the C7-T1 area, with fragments of her spine penetrating the spinal column. Doctors initially delivered a grim prognosis, stating she would never regain her ability to walk. Despite these discouraging words, Lakeshia clings to hope, determined to defy the odds stacked against her.

Presently, Lakeshia is paralyzed from the mid-torso down, lacking sensation in her legs and having limited mobility in her arms. She relies entirely on nurses and her family for even the most basic tasks, leaving her feeling dependent. However, Lakeshia’s tenacity shines through as she diligently attends physical therapy five times a week, slowly but steadily making progress. Her unwavering resolve to overcome this immense hurdle and regain her independence remains a constant driving force.

With the unwavering support of her devoted family, Lakeshia draws strength from God along with their unwavering love and dedication. Together, they navigate the emotional and physical challenges brought on by this traumatic event. Lakeshia’s indomitable spirit propels her forward as she strives to rebuild her life, determined to defy the limitations imposed upon her.

While the path ahead may be arduous, Lakeshia’s resolute determination remains unshaken. She remains focused on reclaiming her life, rebuilding her strength, and transcending the boundaries that have been forced upon her.
